FMRI Programme Director, Kristian Thaller, spent an inspiring day at the Marine Technology and Innovation Showcase held earlier this week in London. Hosted by Innovate UK and sponsored by Defra, the conference put a spotlight on marine autonomy as an exciting area for growth and opportunity.

FMRI Programme Director joins panel of experts

As one of four experts on a panel discussing environmental and marine transformation, Kristian shared FMRI insights and aspirations with the audience.

"The FMRI programme aims to enable scientific discovery by delivering cutting-edge marine capabilities.  Acknowledging the pace of technological change, it is important that we build research infrastructure that both stimulates and assimilates innovation throughout its multi-decade service life. This is essential if the capabilities delivered through FMRI are to remain relevant and keep the UK at the forefront of global scientific endeavour.

"It is an exciting time for the development of marine technology. Working in partnership, the public sector and industry can create an innovative research environment that stimulates  opportunities for science, society and business. We can build the highly skilled workforce that the UK needs for sustained economic growth. And we can enable the understanding required to chart a sustainable future on this planet."

Kristian Thaller, FMRI Programme Director
